Tiny House (Hope, Alaska)

The Tiny House was featured in George Clarke's Alaskan Adventure.

Anchorage Park Strip House

Location: Anchorage
Design: Farrell Homebuilding LLC
Construction: Farrell Homebuilding LLC

Incorporating traditional rooflines with a modern touch, this home has a timber-framed ceiling and craftsman touches throughout. A first floor master bedroom and wheelchair access at all entries offer an age-in-place home. Built with very high thermal energy efficiency, this home has 4” of additional foam on the walls and under slab. Wide plank white oak flooring and a reclaimed brick fireplace make for a warm space.

Downtown Age-In-Place House

Design: WILMWORKS
Construction: Farrell Homebuilding, LLC

Classic lines with contemporary finishes. An efficient, two-bedroom house designed to enjoy until late in life. Oak floors, cedar shingles and a real cobblestone chimney provide a timeless quality while practical features, including full accessibility, truly make this a forever home.

Fairbanks Energy Efficient

Location: Fairbanks
Design: Farrell Homebuilding LLC
Construction: Farrell Homebuilding LLC

This modern new construction home was designed for a 5-star-plus energy rating and incorporates movable insulation on a major scale. This concept helped to create a building fit for the extreme climate of interior Alaska.  Read more about it in the January 2011 issue of Fine Homebuilding Magazine.

Queen Anne

Location: Anchorage
Design: Farrell Homebuilding LLC
Construction: Farrell Homebuilding LLC

This Queen Anne-style new construction was designed to provide a modern and functional age-in-place home while retaining the charm and character of an earlier architectural era. A cupola, swooped rooflines, and intricate detailing are complimented by abundant natural light that maximizes southern exposure. Secret rooms and passageways add a playful element for grandkids and home owners alike. To accommodate the constraints of a standard residential lot and the desire to fit a living room, the garage is set back, its swooped roof mimicking the lines of the main house, allowing for a side entry and mudroom. The home is set up for future wheelchair access, featuring a residential elevator that serves each level of the house, including the garage.

Girdwood

Location: Girdwood
Design: Farrell Homebuilding, LLC
Construction: Farrell Homebuilding, LLC

Sweeping roof lines, exposed beams, locally reclaimed redwood and lots of natural light give a mountain retreat feel. A perfect base to return to from the ski hill! The home also includes a rental apartment with covered parking.

Willow Street Multifamily

Location: Anchorage
Design: DJA Architects/Arete
Construction: Farrell Homebuilding LLC

This contemporary new construction duplex features two private 3-bedroom units. Working within the time constraints required by our client’s 1099 exchange, we broke ground in December and finished the project in April. The building backs up to Fish Creek and each unit enjoys views of the creek and abundant natural light.

Westchester Lagoon Renovation

Location: Anchorage
Design: Farrell Homebuilding LLC
Construction: Farrell Homebuilding LLC

Reworking an existing home for the future. This project had a long list of goals, including addition of Arctic entry and workshop, handicap accessibility, increased energy efficiency, new layout for the master bedroom and bathroom, and resolution of roof ice damming. With thoughtful design and careful craftsmanship, we were able to preserve most of the existing home while adding new features.

1940 House Lift

Location: Anchorage
Design: Farrell Homebuilding LLC
Construction: Farrell Homebuilding LLC

This major remodel retained the classic shape of the original house while integrating modern layout and materials. The entire house was lifted off of its foundation to create a basement with natural light while preserving the historical front entry. The interior and exterior of the house were completely renovated.

Juneau Starr Hill House

Location: Juneau
Design: Farrell Homebuilding LLC
Construction: Corban Custom Construction

Situated in one of Alaska’s oldest neighborhoods, this home is perched on an impressively steep slope and its only access is via a network of boardwalks. The lot was deemed unbuildable until the current home owner recognized its potential. We worked to create a home that took advantage of the sweeping views of Gastineau Channel and downtown Juneau. Its foundation straddles seasonal runoff with a series of concrete buttresses and timber bracings. The rooflines are in keeping with the neighborhood and the materials tell the story of southeast Alaska. Salvaged wood from a Prince of Wales cannery make up the floors and stairs; timbers, siding and decking are from a local sawmill.

Valley of the Moon Renovation

Location: Anchorage
Design: Farrell Homebuilding LLC
Construction: Farrell Homebuilding LLC

A complete makeover of a house that as the homeowner said she wanted to feel a bit more “Portland.” The new addition provides a sunny dining room and kitchen. A trapdoor in the floor of the kitchen leads to a cylindrical root cellar made from an aluminum culvert.

Loso House

Location: Girdwood Alaska.
Design: Farrell Homebulding, LLC
Construction: Homeowner

Life in the snow. This family home balances mountain living with modern lines. Three compact bedrooms with a spacious entry on the ground floor and living space above to enjoy the extra sunlight and views. The original small cabin on site was converted to an accessory dwelling unit (rental). The primary house is less than 2,000 SF.

Workshop

Location: Haines
Design: Farrell Homebuilding LLC
Construction: Farrell Homebuilding LLC

This functional yet charming workshop was constructed with local southeast Alaskan materials. Large sliding doors fully open the east and south walls to expose the corner post and knee braces, maximizing connection with the outdoors. Timbers were milled from trees on this remote property and windows were crafted on site to align when doors are open or closed.
